Crafting is a great way for children to process their emotions by expressing their creativity. It’s also a great way to connect with your children, or the children you care for. But we know that sometimes craft time can sound like “make a gigantic mess time!” without any sort of direction, which can be overwhelming to a caregiver who is already struggling with their mental health. So, we wanted to give you some craft ideas this month with clear directions to help it stay fun!

Love you to pieces supplies you need

  • Photo Laminating pouch
  • Paper for card
  • Colorful cellophane or tissue paper
  • Heart template
  • Colored pens and craft materials of choice to decorate
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Grab your supplies

Step 1: Fold your paper card in half and draw a heart shape in the center of the front (it helps if you have a heart template to trace, such as a heart shaped cookie cutter).

Step 2: Cut the heart out.

Step 3: Cut small 1 inch squares out of the colored cellophane or tissue paper.

Step 4: Fill the Photo Laminating pouch with the colored squares. Once full, seal.

Step 5: Cut the heart out of the Photo Laminating pouch. Make sure to cut the heart out a little bigger than the original cut-out so that it fully covers the hole in the front of the card.

Step 6: Glue or tape the laminated heart from the back of the front of the card so that the suncatcher/laminated heart completely fill in the heart-shaped hole.

Step 7: Let the kids color a picture or write a note on the inside. This will make a wonderful, HEART-felt card to celebrate mom!

Paper Bag Piñatas (Hello Cinco de Mayo!)

Paper Bag Piñatas supplies you need

  • One paper lunch sack per child
  • Magazine or newspaper pages
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Yarn or twine
  • Hole punch
  • Candy (or small toys/items if you prefer not to use candy)
  • Optional – stapler

Grab your supplies

How To Make A Paper Bag Piñata

Step 1: Fill your paper bag with as much candy or small toys as you like, but make sure not to overdo it or it will be too heavy to hang.

Step 2: Crinkle the newspaper or magazine papers to fill the bag the rest of the way.

Step 3: Fold the top of the bag over and secure with tape or staple.

Step 4: Cut the tissue paper into strips that are long enough to wrap around the paper bag. This is a great chance for creativity – let the child pick their favorite colors or patterns.

Step 5: Cut slits halfway up your tissue paper, every inch or so, to create fringe.

Step 6: Using the glue or tape, attach the fringed tissue paper along the bottom of the bag. It should slightly hang over the bottom of the bag.

Step 7: Using glue or tape again, attach the next tissue paper ring around the bag, overlapping slightly on top of the already secured bottom tissue ring. Continue to build up the bag, overlapping slightly, until the bag is covered in colorful fringe.

Step 8: Punch two holes at the top, one on each end.

Step 9: Cut a piece of yarn or twine a few feet long and thread it through one hole on your piñata, securing it with a knot. Tie the other side of the yarn or twine to the other side of the bag.

Step 10: Cut several more 1-inch strips of tissue paper, about 4-6 inches long, and secure to the bottom of the bag with tape or glue.

Hang and have fun!!!
